Bonefish

Since we're on the topic of "incidental" catches. We gotta talk about the Bonefish! We love these fish, they are like being hooked up to a lightning bolt. They make spirited runs and are complete chaos at boatside. We make it a point to not touch these fish as they are pretty delicate, and extremely slimy! So we net, picture and release. These fish are a local subspecies called the "Cortez Bonefish" and are a relative to the warm water version found in tropical destinations like the Bahamas and other places. When they are around we often catch several a day. Often times when you've found an area where they foraging, you can catch them there for at least a couple of weeks. Their bite is a little weird, as you are working your lure, it will be like someone is playing with it. This is because they feed in a peculiar way as they "grub" along the bottom looking for crustaceans. They are quite the prize and hopefully you get to experience one or more!
