What to Expect Fishing in Each Season
So you want to fish in San Diego, here's what you can expect...

Spotted Bay Bass
Year round
First, lets interject with this: Spotted Bay Bass are around always! These are a staple of our bay fishery, and are available year round always! To locals these are a treasure to us, and you'll see why. They fight like a Smallmouth Bass with an anger issue (everyone says this is very accurate). Fishing for these is strictly catch and release, they are abundant and we want to keep it that way!

Bonefish
Spring & Summer
Let's Start our annual calendar with our springtime fishery. This should of course naturally start with spring break. But more importantly, the water in the south bay is starting to warm up quickly and Halibut are making a run into the bay to spawn. This can be hit and miss, but when you hit, it's a big one! Everything else starts to run in this time of year from Barracuda to Bonefish. Often times, we are chasing birds that are working school of fish this time of year. Outside, rockfishing opens up and we can make a run to the 9 mile bank or other areas for Rock Cod that just reopened. This is excellent freezer filler fishing. The Coronado Islands give up some big Lingcod this time of year.

Rock Cod
Year Round
Moving on to summer, the halibut move to the upper bay and the bass become very active. The Sand Bass move into spawn mode everywhere and the Spotted bass are on suicide mode, often times we exceed 100 bass a trip. Bonefish become a notable bycatch when bay fishing. We're still chasing birds on bay trips. Rock Cod fishing is full speed outside. Fishing is very consitent! The big news flash is often Yellowtail start to arrive at the Coronados and offshore on floating kelps. Everything heats up and often the question is "what do we want to catch?".

Sand Bass
Year Round
As summer progresses and we move into the dog days and early fall, bay bass are as always full speed, lots of big Sand Bass on upper bay trips especially. Occasionally we do get a nice Halibut or Black Sea Bass (protected). The Coronado Islands yellowtail are typically biting well this time of year. The tuna offshore are local and in warmer years the Dorado (Mahi) are also local and accesible. This is really the time of year to schedule an offshore or islands trip if yellowtail or tuna are your intended target.

Yellowtail
Summer into Fall
Fall-Early winter puts the Swordfish on center stage. If you ever wanted to chase one of these, this is the time. It's definitely a patience game, but if you want one, this is how you get one! We fish electric reels in deep water drops. The halibut make their migration back into the bay, especially after the fall rains. Rock Cod reopens in deep water and some real prize catches happen. Tuna and yellowtail can still be around depending on temperatures and other environmental factors (El Nino).

Halibut
Spring Summer & Fall
Winter can see some Halibut show up to the bay as the prepare for their Spring spawn and gorge on the abundant bait. Rockfish is open but only in Mexican waters. Of course our ubiquitous bass supply is going strong this time of year and occasionally we get some real trophies! This winds us back up to the spring fishing and the cycle repeats!
